A Conversational Virtual Financial Assistant

Project Overview

Peterpan is an experimental project exploring the future of conversational banking through a voice and chatbot powered virtual assistant. The goal was to reimagine how users interact with mobile banking, making the experience feel more natural, intelligent, and emotionally resonant. Instead of tapping and scrolling through traditional menus, users could simply ask, speak, and get things done in a humanlike dialogue interface.

The assistant supported core banking transactions like money transfers, balance inquiries, and investment updates. The interface embraced dark gradients, dynamic animations, and voice first navigation to create an intuitive, futuristic experience.

Goals

  • Explore how voice and conversational interfaces can reduce friction in mobile banking
  • Increase accessibility and emotional connection through speech based and chatbot driven UI
  • Deliver a minimalist, focused experience that adapts to user intent in real time
  • Prototype a system that supports quick task completion with minimal cognitive effort

My Role

As the Lead Product Designer on this innovation project, I was responsible for crafting the conversational UX flow, visual system, and prototype logic. I collaborated with developers, motion designers, and AI researchers to bring the experience to life.

Responsibilities included:

  • Designing full user journeys for voice driven and typed interactions
  • Creating dynamic UI mockups and animations
  • Defining microinteractions, edge cases, and fallback behavior
  • Storyboarding and documenting conversation logic for both chat and voice

UX / Design Highlights

  • Conversational first interface: Designed each screen around a single user intent, minimizing distractions and decision fatigue
  • Voice UI with fallback typing: Enabled both spoken and typed interactions, ensuring accessibility and flexibility
  • Minimalist layout: Large typography, dark gradients, and contrast hierarchy helped focus attention
  • Asymmetrical visual balance: Applied advanced layout principles for dynamic, modern feel without compromising readability
  • Dynamic response tone: Included personality in assistant replies, making interactions feel more human
  • Future forward aesthetics: Used animated visuals and AI inspired graphics to convey intelligence and trust

Design Concept

  • User-centered flow: Each screen shows only one focal point. Chat history is hidden by default to reduce distraction, allowing focus on the current task. For example, when a user requests a money transfer, Peterpan takes them directly to the transfer screen and returns them to the home screen when done. Chat history remains accessible via the “Recents” tab.
  • Enlarged typography: Large fonts improve clarity, ensure readability, and reduce the risk of missing key details.
  • Futuristic aesthetics: A darker gradient tone creates a sense of sophistication and advanced intelligence.

Challenges

  • Designing for ambiguity and open ended user input in a banking context
  • Balancing aesthetics with accessibility across voice, text, and touch
  • Avoiding over automation while keeping interactions helpful and human
  • Creating scalable conversational flows that could adapt to diverse intents

Outcomes

  • Developed a fully working prototype and tested with internal stakeholders
  • Received strong feedback for clarity, emotional tone, and futuristic appeal
  • Used as a design research foundation for future conversational finance products
  • Paved the way for voice first interface exploration in financial applications
